Taichi (Taiji)

The Art of Integrating Energy and Movement in the Flow of Life

A path for the harmonious development of body, mind, and energy.

Preface

At our studio, Taiji is not simply a martial art or a physical practice—it is a path for the integrated cultivation of body, mind, and inner energy (Qi).

Each student begins their Taiji journey with a specialized assessment, enabling us to design a personalized training path aligned with their individual goals, abilities, and needs. The curriculum is rooted in foundational principles such as structural alignment, conscious breathing, coordinated movement, and deep internal force awareness.

Our training programs weave together traditional forms, internal energy cultivation through Neigong, practical martial applications, and meditative movement practices that bring body and mind into harmonious alignment.

By following the official YMAA curriculum and maintaining direct connection with Master Yang’s systems, the learning process is continuously evaluated and refined—ensuring that each practitioner receives a living, authentic, and profound experience of Taiji.

Educational methods

Tai Chi training in our studio is offered in a step-by-step progression. First, basic movements such as “Peng, Lu, Ji, An” from the traditional long form of Yang style are taught. Then, the applications of more complex movements are gradually introduced. Instructors place special emphasis on foot positioning, knee bending, hip rotation, rootedness, and clarity of movements. Group and individual practices take place in a calm environment, and traditional breathing techniques are taught in every session to deepen the harmony between mind and body.

Goals and benefits

Tai Chi exercises offer numerous physical and mental benefits. This gentle yet continuous practice can serve as an aerobic activity for the heart and, according to experts, “strengthens the heart more than you might think and helps prevent cardiovascular diseases.”

Evaluation and progress path

The progress of Tai Chi students is followed through a structured and step-by-step program. After an initial assessment of balance, strength, and physical ability, each individual begins at an appropriate level of forms. Instructors gradually introduce more complete forms along with technical tips and personalized corrections. Feedback from sessions and periodic movement tests (such as maintaining balance during standing meditation) help students recognize their limitations and, through regular practice, achieve greater fitness and coordination.

Summer Seminars on Tai Chi and Medical Qigong – YFH, USA

In the summer of 2025, a series of specialized seminars took place at the mountain retreat of Yang’s Family Heights (YFH) with the presence of Dr. Yang. These seminars featured advanced training in Tai Chi Chuan, Tai Chi Sword, Push Hands (Tuishou), and Fighting Set forms.

The final segment focused primarily on Medical Qigong and the Grand Circulation of Energy (Da Mai). Although the groups were smaller in size, participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and commitment.

All classes were held at full capacity, and the combination of a serene retreat environment alongside the mountain nature created an ideal setting for focused learning and growth. Meals were provided by a professional chef, emphasizing healthful and nourishing cuisine.

Dr. Yang has announced that summer 2026 may mark the final occurrence of these seminars at YFH.

Taichi Sword (Wu An)

The Tai Chi (Taiji) sword delves into the depth of Tai Chi Chuan practice, combining slow, graceful movements with mental focus and deep breathing. Like Tai Chi Chuan, it is often practiced for health benefits such as improving balance, body alignment, and relaxation, while also cultivating internal energy. The sword acts as an extension of the body, challenging the practitioner to coordinate the whole body while strengthening the limbs.

In this workshop, participants will learn and practice:

  • Basic sword principles individually and with a partner
  • The 54-move sequence (beginners start with a few initial moves)
  • Techniques and applications

Prerequisite: Experience with empty-hand Tai Chi Chuan is required. Prior weapons experience is helpful but not necessary.

Sword: A wooden sword is required for partner practice. A metal sword may be used for solo training. If you don’t have one, wooden swords are available for purchase at the school.

Compensatory Release Valves and Inner Order in Yoga, Qigong, and Taijiquan In the classical body–mind traditions, movement has never been an end in itself. It has always been understood as a means for establishing inner order. In both classical Indian Yoga and the Chinese traditions of Qigong and Taijiquan, the foundational principle is clear: body, breath, and mind must be organized within a coherent structure for vitality, energy, and awareness to circulate correctly.

Its core framework is grounded in the Three Vital Elements—known as the “Three Treasures” (San Bao): Essence (Jing), Qi, and Spirit (Shen).
