A Busy Mind, a Tired Body: Where Does Fatigue Come From?

Many people associate fatigue only with physical activity, lack of sleep, or long hours of work. Yet everyday experience tells a different story: a person can feel deeply exhausted after a day spent mostly sitting at a desk, remaining indoors, or even appearing outwardly quiet and inactive. At the same time, after a few hours of mindful movement—such as Tai Chi, Qigong, or Yoga—one may feel not tired, but lighter, clearer, and more alive. This contrast suggests that fatigue is not merely the result of muscular exertion; it can also arise from the hidden and continuous activity of the mind.

What we call “rest” is not always true rest. The body may be still, while the mind remains occupied with revisiting the past, anticipating the future, judging others, replaying conversations, constructing scenarios, worrying, and engaging in inner dialogue. In such moments, a person may appear calm from the outside, while their cognitive system is working constantly on the inside. This is why a seemingly idle day can sometimes feel more draining than a physically active one.

The Brain as a Predictive System

From the perspective of neuroscience and cognitive psychology, the brain is never completely switched off. Even at rest, certain networks remain active, supporting internal processing, memory recall, imagination, self-reflection, and future prediction. One of the most important discoveries of the past two decades in this field is the identification of the Default Mode Network (DMN)—a network that becomes more active when attention is no longer directed toward the external environment and instead turns inward.

This network is involved in familiar experiences such as daydreaming, recalling memories, self-analysis, judging others, replaying conversations, and simulating possible futures. In other words, when we think we are “doing nothing,” the mind may in fact be engaged in some of its most complex activity. Here the theory of predictive processing becomes especially relevant. According to this view, the brain is not merely a passive receiver of information; it is constantly building models of the world and predicting what is likely to happen next. This ability is essential for survival, but when it slips out of service to reality, the mind can enter an endless cycle of possibility-making and scenario-building: “What if this happens?”, “What if I made a mistake?”, “What if tomorrow brings this or that?”

At that point, the mind is no longer responding to reality; it is living in hypothetical worlds. This distance from the present is one of the major sources of cognitive fatigue.

Where Cognitive Fatigue Comes From

Cognitive psychology describes this condition through concepts such as cognitive load, rumination, and mental fatigue. Mental fatigue does not necessarily mean that the brain is consuming dramatically more energy; after all, the brain uses a large amount of energy even at rest. The issue lies more in how attention is organized and how neural resources are continuously deployed. When networks involved in self-referential thinking, executive control, and monitoring attention remain active without interruption, people gradually experience reduced concentration, less mental flexibility, slower decision-making, and a general sense of depletion.

For this reason, a few hours of worry, anxiety, or mental preoccupation can feel far more exhausting than several hours of physical work. A mind that cannot let go is effectively working nonstop, even if the body remains still. This pattern is especially common in people who tend toward perfectionism, excessive responsibility, high anxiety, or a strong need for control. Such people are not only dealing with real events; they are simultaneously managing dozens of possible outcomes, imagined conversations, and hypothetical futures. From the outside they may seem composed, but inside, their minds never stop simulating the world.

Why Mindful Movement Feels Restorative

This is where practices such as Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga become especially meaningful. Although they require attention and coordination, they often do not create the same sense of exhaustion. The reason is that these practices shift attention away from mental representations of the world and toward the immediate experience of the body. A mind that is usually lost in past and future is brought back to the contact of the feet with the ground, the quality of breathing, the rhythm of movement, the feeling of balance, the weight of the body, the direction of force, and the inner sense of presence.

This shift is not merely psychological. On the neural level, it is associated with reduced involvement of self-referential networks and greater coordination among attention, proprioception, and motor regulation systems. In traditional language, the same experience is described as the return of Qi, settling into the Dantian, the release of Song, and inner harmony. In simple terms, mental energy moves away from endlessly producing narratives and control, and toward direct, regulated experience of the body. As a result, the practitioner often feels not more tired, but clearer, lighter, and more alive after practice.

Traditional Views of the Same Experience

It is striking that Eastern traditions described this same phenomenon long before the language of neuroscience emerged. In Daoism, a mind that constantly analyzes, compares, judges, and tries to control everything has moved away from harmony with the natural flow of life. Practices such as Xin Zhai (“fasting of the mind”) and Zuowang (“sitting and forgetting”) are not designed to shut down thought in the sense of eliminating it, but to loosen attachment to the endless stream of thoughts. The goal is not to stop the mind from functioning, but to allow it to remain active only when necessary and otherwise rest in stillness and harmony.

In Yoga, Patañjali’s famous definition states that yoga is the settling of the fluctuations of the mind. This does not mean that thought is the enemy; it means that when the mind is constantly moving between past and future, it disconnects the person from direct experience of life. Thus, asana, pranayama, and meditation serve as means of returning awareness to the body, the breath, and the present moment.

In Buddhism, the term Papañca refers to the process by which the mind takes a simple event and turns it into a long chain of interpretations, stories, and worries. A small incident becomes an entire world of narrative in the mind of a person caught in mental proliferation. From this perspective, much of human suffering does not come from events themselves, but from the stories the mind creates around them.

Even in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the concept of Si, or excessive thinking, is used to describe a state in which the mind becomes overactive and this constant engagement disrupts the natural flow of Qi, leading to diminished vitality, impaired concentration, and a feeling of heaviness. Although the language differs from that of neuroscience, both point to the same human experience: a mind that remains continuously engaged in processing reduces the quality of presence and functioning.

Conclusion: Fatigue Does Not Come Only from the Body

What we call fatigue is often not the result of physical activity alone, but of prolonged residence in the mind-made world of predictions, analysis, replaying, comparison, and endless worry. Neuroscience explains this through the Default Mode Network, predictive processing, and cognitive fatigue. Eastern traditions describe the same phenomenon in different language but with a closely related meaning: departure from natural flow, mental agitation, narrative proliferation, and loss of presence.

Across all these perspectives, the solution is the same: a return from living in mental representations to the immediate experience of the present. This return does not happen by suppressing thought, but by training attention so that it can move with balance between thinking and being, between analysis and presence, between activity and release. Breathing, stillness, meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga are all tools for cultivating this capacity.

In the end, energy is not restored by bodily rest alone. The mind must also learn not to remain constantly at work. True calm appears when a person can think deeply when needed, and when it is no longer needed, let thought go and remain in the living experience of the moment. This is what traditional wisdom called presence, and what modern neuroscience can also recognize as a foundation of nervous system regulation and cognitive health.
